Welcome! To the opening salvo of what we’re calling…
TV Cream’s Most Unforgettable Theme!
Over the next umpteen weeks, we’re going to be asking you to vote on an array of different theme tunes as we ultimately progress to identify the very best ever heard on British TV. We’re in the ‘heats’ stages right now, wherein we’re battling themes of a similar genre. And so we begin in the world of politics. What do you need to do? Simply listen to the four tunes (above) and then vote for the best, below…
[NB. To get around Soundcloud copyright issues, we’ve added 30 seconds of actual continuity at the start of the Weekend World track. But, everyone loves actual continuity, right?]
This poll will close on 30 October 2014 at 1700: Vote early and vote often…

Come on Creamguide… no ‘World in Action’?! Fab tune, with the added back story of royalties disputes between the parties concerned. Don’t recall the details of that, but there’s plenty about it on YouTube if you look.
An honourable mention to for the use of Sibelius’ “Karelia suite” on ‘This Week’?
Looking forward to the forthcoming weeks, but my top theme is and always will be “The Sweeney!”!

Forgot about the beauty of the titles and music for On The Record. The genius of what sounds like a modulated sample of Big Ben’s chime for the roar!

Always used to watch the start of ‘On the Record’ for the theme tune and the brilliant Big Ben crocodile, then used to switch over before the boring programme.

Even people that are rubbish at impressions can do Brian Walden.

Tony Perry – we classify World in Action as ‘News’. And next Thursday, we’re battling News themes…

I have no memory of that Weekend World theme at all. I can only assume that at even the slightest hint of Brian Walden I turned to BBC One.

Hey this is a great interactive part of your magazine you send out. Panorama is a great theme that also could have been included, I also like The Daily politics Theme. Cant wait for the police dramas round.

I used to watch just the On The Record titles for the Big Ben Crocodile roaring.

It’s a tough job and I salute you all for doing it. Surely you’re not going to limit the sport section to just four choices are you? We need at least four groups of four with all winners going into a deciding group…

Aaah Nantucket Sleigh Ride, AKA ‘the one everybody confuses with World In Action’. Both fine themes which induce a frisson of nostalgic anxiety as I’m transported straight back to 1978.
Incidentally, the Mountain Live album is worth seeking out. The version of Nantucket Sleigh Ride on there takes up a whole side — almost half an hour long if memory serves me right.

Weekend World – a proper theme tune to a proper politics show when it really was politics!

How could Weekend World EVER come anything but first??? I was a bit scared of World in Action… But I’ll be honest, I was properly sh*tting myself about Weekend World! World in Action was Monday, 8.30, ITV. So, invariably busy doing other stuff. But 75{30e2395aaf6397fd02d2c79d91a1fe7cbb73158454674890018aee9c53a0cb96} in on the weekend had to be maneuvered in such a way so as not to spill my Crosse and Blackwell Tomato soup all over my bellbottoms in terror. But I have to thank a past work colleague, Croy Thomson, in my education in who created the Weekend World Theme. Now I relish it. I used to be scared of thunder and lightning. Now I understand it, I’m no longer afraid of it. Same goes with Nantucket Sleighride by Mountain. And I encourage everyone to confront their fear.
