    Wish you had included Panorama or Newsnight themes they really get your attention

    Such a tough one! News at Ten just shades it for me; whilst I think the WIA theme is a stunning piece of music, it (for me) has a life away from it’s primary purpose of a theme tune – NaT lives only within it’s intended context and is brilliant at it!

    Has to be Nationwide for me, the only one you can dance to. Though I don’t know why that would be important.

    While the BBC One O’Clock News theme *is* excellent (not counting the Birt-inspired re-recording of 1993, of course), I don’t think I would have included it on this shortlist – instead choosing one of the following:

    * BBC Six O’Clock News theme (1984-93)
    * ITN First Report / News at One theme (1972-87)
    * “Non Stop” by John Malcolm (used on just about all ITN bulletins without a number of some kind in their titles from 1955-82)

    But I suppose the shortlist couldn’t include more than one ITN theme; nor could it include both “The Good Word” and the theme of Nationwide’s second replacement.

    Is there a place anywhere for the marvelous ‘Money Programme’ tune I wonder? Elmer Bernstein’s repurposed theme from The Carpetbaggers was always a favourite of mine.

    A shame, actually, that it didn’t make the shortlist – not only was it used in one form or another throughout the show’s 40+ years on air, but IMO it was just as excellent a fit as “Nantucket Sleighride” was for Weekend World.

    Did I say *throughout* the show’s 40+ years on air?

    Scratch that – it spent the early ’90s in exile, as that period’s “coin gears” title sequence was accompanied by a different tune altogether:

    To be fair, it probably wouldn’t have fit this title sequence very well – an impressive piece of CGI for the time, but perhaps too dramatic to be accompanied by jazz funk.
