Captain Nemo’s Undersea Adventures

EARLY ENTRY in the endless foreign import animation stable (see AROUND THE WORLD WITH WILLY FOGG) with all those dreaded elements already in place: weird bastardisation of original hero (here sporting – eh? – a beard), unnecessary meddling with the companions (one apparently called Johnny), sassy robot for the youngsters.

If you watch an episode of this on YouTube, you’ll see it was called The Undersea Adventures of Captain Nemo, the Cap didn’t have a beard but did have a reverse Dickie Davies dark streak in his hair, and I couldn’t spot a robot. Looks like an educational five minuter, a la Sealab. The bastardisation comment is entirely correct, however. Blame Jacques Cousteau.

If this is what I think it is… A five minute or so short with an ecological theme. Oil spills kill the krill, the whales can’t eat any krill, the whales die, the Norwegians go out of business, we don’t get any more cheap furniture, and so on. It used to have a strange effect on the kid next door; although being a very short animation he used to become increasingly agitated at the ecological theme, breathing heavily and becoming restless and fidgety, before running outside at the programs conclusion to commit some random act of violence against a tree or border hedge.
