Eureka

“EUREKA – OR, I HAVE FOUND IT!” trilled Beadlebum in the first episode, welcoming viewers to his personal playground peopled by that bloke who invented the biro and that woman who created the safety pin and that other one who thought up the zip. A CLIVE DOIG creation, so “learning is fun” element well to the fore. Stock repetory – MIKE SAVAGE, MADELINE SMITH, THE CRAP DR WHO and others – re-enacted the discoveries while first Jeremy, later PAUL MCDOWELL, tittered from the sidelines. WILF LUNN served up interludes by way of disaster-prone useless inventions, usually an exploding seagull-shaped hat.

Complete with boingy / quirky synth theme from Denton & Cook IIRC.

There’s latter day controversy about Blue Peter doing that vintage underwear bit in a “what were they thinking?” way, but around the same time Eureka did the invention of the bra. The first one was made from two handkerchiefs sewn together. There you go, I learned something.

Another sad passing, not least as it severely narrows the pool of ‘genuine eccentrics’; back in the day, there were loads of them: Wilf, Bob Symes, Hoffnung, Magnus Pyke, Stanley Unwin, Cardew Robinson, Viv Stanshall (although Roger Ruskin Spear is still with us). Who is there today who fits this category? Perhaps Noel Fielding (an acquired taste I admit)?
