TV: C is for...

Colin’s Sandwich

A CHUBBY DEPRESSED MEL SMITH works for the complaints department of British Rail by day (cue much “food is terrible” business) and by night was an undiscovered writing talent trying to complete (in series one) a story for the Langley Book of Horror, and (in series two) a treatment for a TV movie, Countdown to Midnight. Much of the show took monologue form whilst Col worked into the night, distracted by his girlfriend, LOUISA “MRS PATTERSON” RIX, disruptive best friend Des, obnoxiously happy couple Richard and Sarah, and his respective employers. Little remembered, like Saver AwayDays.

Mel Smith was one of those rare actors who was always fun to watch, in fact he even made the ropey screen adaptation of Tom Sharpe’s Wilt novels watchable.

Watching this again recently, I’d forgotten how frustrating it was with Colin his own worst enemy, procrastinating, losing faith in himself, and talking himself into needlessly stressful situations. It gets very bleak in the second series too, and the laughs dry up before a (thankfully) happy ending. Mel Smith was perfect for Colin’s verbose sarcasm. It holds up pretty well.
