Radio 1: The Jocks

PAGE, Mark

Sometimes, it's not even worth bothering to think of a 'funny' captionKNOWN as ‘Me, Mark Page’ to those few who listened to his tucked-away show, junior Steve Wright in appearance, but every bit young Alan Partridge in reality, whose main triumph was an elaborate and inconsistently told story in which he had, in a previous life, a ‘try-out’ for Darlington FC. Confusingly, also adopted ‘straight ahead’ muso approach when roped in for holiday cover on Saturday Live.

Me Mark Page graduated from doing the breakfast show on Radio Tees (or TFM, as it became) where he was a well liked local celebrity and plunged into virtual obscurity with a short lived Radio 1 career (he did one edition of Top Of The Pops where nobody south of York had ever heard of him). He should never have left Radio Tees – our weekday mornings were brightened by his anecodtes about “Dennis of the Boro”, the Wednesday Wubble and his own version of Convoy called “Dennis and his CB” that knocks spots off the DLT version. I’d love to know where he is now and what he’s doing.

What’s he doing now? A long stretch at Her Majesty’s Pleasure.

I think we must have missed his sole appearance on the Top Of The Pops repeats as I’m sure TVC would have made a big thing of it.

I met Mark Page at a Radio 1 Roadshow at Seaton Carew in 1985, Seaton Carew being not far from Teesside, and Radio 1 was keen to promote the local lad made good at the roadshow. Seemed very down to earth and friendly and seemed delighted he’d made the big time. OTOH I can remember the weather being terrible that day- 1985 was a poor summer- and the roadshow nearly going off air due to the rain.
Mark, last I heard, was working on Garrison FM, the radio station for Catterick Garrison, again not far from where he grew up.

    Yet another DJ sex offender.

@ Droogie, to many people on Teesside, Me Mark Page will always be known as a popular announcer and DJ at The Riverside Stadium and the local lad who made it to Radio 1 in the eighties after a successful spell on Radio Tees, but his reputation is in ruins now after being sentenced to 12 years for various sex offences. It did shock me when Page was charged, but there again, many people felt the same about Jimmy Savile.

The revelations about Mark Page had me thinking & noticing the above mention of Alan Partridge, who is a blend of various presenters, & probably not consciously based on Mark Page.

Oddly This Time With Alan Partridge has Alan replaced a recently deceased presenter who was found to have a dodgy past.

Now Steve Coogan is making a docu-drama about Jimmy Saville!?

Also the Children Of Castor starring Steve Coogan on-off drama mentions one of the actors on the show was found with dodgy stuff on his hard drive.
