Yep, it’s the iffy ‘hmm, let’s try and sell this series to the Yanks’ edition. Phil Silvers is as wasted as any comedic genius could possibly be in this Foreign Legion also-ran with Kenneth ‘International Cabaret’ Williams and Charles ‘Best of The Smiths’ Hawtrey as his fellow roller towels, and Jim Dale and Peter Butterworth as the L&H-esque newly-joined gentleman and dogsbody. Additionally – Joan ‘Ouija Board, Ouija Board video’ Sims, Bernard ‘camel – bobo’ Bresslaw, Anita ‘you too could have a body like mine’ Harris and William ‘kindly old gentleman on the train waved at by Jenny Agutter’ Mervyn.

There’s are lots of behind the scenes stories about this film, mostly to do with Phil Silvers insisting on using idiot boards for his lines, & Kenneth Williams regarding it as unprofessional.
Getting a camel raised in captivity to walk on sand was an interesting unexpected problem.
