EARTHY ATTEMPT to popularise earthy Professional Northern earthiness in shape of mass participatory sports of bar billiards, bar skittles and shove ha’penny, the latter, averred host FRED TRUEMAN in earthy fashion, “matches the skill and dexterity of the miniature portrait painter.” Whole shebang set in a pretend pub, complete with awful lifesize cartoon murals of be-flared ’70s people. Ultra-cheap institution of a weekend lunchtime, judiciously – and earthily – helmed by NEIL CLEMINSON, DAVE LANNING and KEITH MACKLIN.

André Brasseur’s theme tune “Waiting for you” must be worth a mention. Fiery Fred was a seasoned southerner basher – some good clips from the series on youtube.

Great theme tune it has to be said Mike.Perfect for shoulders-all-over-the-shop-dancing as seen on Fantasy World Cup Live 98.

This must be what Stuart Maconie had in mind when describing the 70s as a “very yorkshire decade”.

In most episodes you’d be lucky to see who won the matches, so easily distracted was the director. Judging by the amount of beer flowing, maybe in most cases the participants were too pissed to get anything finished anyway? We should be thankful there wasn’t a brawl.
