UNSILENCEABLY northern ‘earthy’ humour-toting sister of Andy, bafflingly teamed with Bruno Brookes to present Weekend Breakfast show, to the infinite irritation of a hangover-struck nation. Much forced banter and desperate name-calling ensued, as did several unsuccessful records (It Takes Two, Let’s Dance, Come Outside) for charidee.

Disappointing 21st Century reinvention as a racist has so far done surprisingly little to hinder her continuing career on 6Music.

I’m listening to her right now and she doesn’t sound very racist, she was only just there reminiscing about taking tiffin with Yazz and Neneh Cherry.

@ THX 1139, whatever happened to Yazz and her Plastic Population, never heard of them again after 1989, while Neneh Cherry was still having hits as late as 1995 and I think is planning a comeback. Always rated 7 Seconds with Youssou N Dour, had considerably more artistic merit than The Only Way Is Up.

I wondered the same after seeing Yazz on the Top of the Pops repeats, and apparently she had a baby, settled down, became a Born Again Christian and tried a comeback that failed a few years ago. Now she lives quietly in Spain, I believe.
Neneh’s still in the business, she pops up every so often with new material or in media jobs. Her daughter won a Brit Award last week.

I think Yazz was one of the generation of performers that came out in 1988/89 and vanished when the nineties arrived. Neneh, due to having a lot of critical acclaim with Buffalo Stance and ability to switch from rapping to conventional singing, managed to keep her career going for several years. 7 Seconds is class.

Music changed very fast between 1987 & 1992 so a lot of acts who looked like the next big thing could be struggling to get high in the charts just a year or 2 later. Whole styles of music went from being obscure to mainstream & back in this period.
Some artists were dexterous enough ride the waves, Neneh Cherry being one of them.
