Roundtable/Singled Out

JUKE BOX JURY without the silly hooter, basically. Dependable format – get several pop pundits, plus a jury ‘foreman’ selected from The One’s roster to review the week’s new releases. Blandness of the guests usually led to bland old opinions on bland old records, though more fun could be had in the presence of madcap characters like Keith Moon and Andy Partridge, or the occasional stray Mel Smith-era comic. Widely recalled ‘off message’ moments included Malcolm Maclaren calling ex-Prince proteges Wendy and Lisa “a couple of lesbians” who “don’t care and just fuck about”, and Yello’s quixotic Dieter Meier describing Mike and The Mechanics’ The Living Years as “worse than the worst pornography”.

What the heck does Dieter Meier know about music anyway? ‘The Living Years’ was and is far superior to any of the rubbish he and his band turned out.

Gotta disagree, Gold Rush and The Race are far more exciting records than The Living Years, and you wouldn’t have had Michael J. Fox accompanied by Mike and the Mechanics in The Secret of My Success, it just wouldn’t have been right. All I Need is a Miracle is a much better record, because it had Roy Kinnear in the video.

Anyway, the best ever Singled Out was the one with Robert Palmer and Cyndi Lauper, they had terrific chemistry, were really funny together and would have been much better than Bruno and Liz on the weekend breakfast show.

You can’t imagine “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” with him driving around in the ’61Ferrari 250 GT California with “Over My Shoulder” playing out,can ya?

    “Bom Bom…chick-a-chick-ah!!!”

Didn’t Billy Idol appear on here blind drunk and started swearing so much he was escorted out of the studio and banned from live radio for life? I’m sure I read about this in Smash Hits.
I can also remember Janice Long being very nasty about AC/DC’s single Heatseeker, saying it would flop and only the most desperate metal fans would buy it, but actually was one of their biggest hits, which proves DJs own musical tastes don’t always win out in the end.
