Perishers, The

MODEST PRE-NATIONWIDE cartoonery with various crap kids (Marlon, Maisie, the little one, the one with the hat) and their dog Wellington Boot, voiced by LEONARD ROSSITER, forever building go karts. Did weird little arms-out hully-gully at the start.

I had the album, ‘The Perishers Sing!’. I think I may be in a minority there.

At the end of every episode, Leonard Rossiter would say “perishing kids!” which to my ears sounded like “Perishinkers!”. I was baffled about what a perishinker was.

I recall this being shown around the same time on the BBC as the Fred Basset cartoon ( which had even more shoddy animation) in the children’s teatime TV 5 minute cartoon slot before the news. I never understood why the Beeb which was so puritanical about not being seen to advertise anything back then ( remember the whole Top Cat/ Boss Cat farrago) were OK to show 2 cartoons each blatantly plugging a daily newspaper in the titles.

The dirt-cheap animation was such a disappointment after being raised on Dennis Collins’ beautiful illustrations in the daily strip. For some reason, the voice-overs all sounded like they were recorded in a cupboard under the stairs using a microphone wrapped in a sock.
