STEPHENS, Robert

stephensFrom a theatre perspective (darling) a career of untold promise cut short in the 1960s by a descent into alcoholism that ruined his legend but provided Gyles Brandreth with some excitingly ribald anecdotes. But Hamlet’s loss was The Asphyx’s gain, as the big screen benefited no end from his turns as Sherlock Holmes in The Private Life of…, hotcha art teacher Teddy Lloyd in the Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, and Dora Bryan’s squeeze in A Taste of Honey. Oh, and some Shakespeare stuff and all.

FINEST HOUR: Nicking David Warner’s wife Vanessa Redgrave as the slick, smarmy proto-Yuppie Charles Napier in Morgan: a Suitable Case for Treatment.
