Take a close look at that ’50s/’60s war film you’ve got there. Who’s that stocky bloke, standing near the back, in a reasonably lowly rank of uniform? It is of course David Lodge, veteran of nearly a hundred films, and often mustachioed with it. After the war film heyday, his roles took on the aspect of a genuine demobee – coppers, caretakers, guards and petty officials. Oh, and mucking up Bernard Cribbins’ celebrations in The Railway Children.
FINEST HOUR: He was in Cockleshell Heroes, you know!
