Hall of Fame

CAINE, Michael

caineNot one for our own personal Hall of Fame, but nominations came in from several friends of the Unusual Stain, including Steve Roundwood, who opines: ‘Yes he gets stick for some of his roles and rightly so, but The Ipcress File shows he’s more than a pair of glasses and a frown. He deserves a nod for Zulu too in my opinion.’ You’ve convinced us, son – in he goes.

FINEST HOUR: Even we have to admit his flint-eyed gangster bent on Tyneside revenge in Get Carter is well nigh unforgettable.

I thought it was all one long role… just continued in EVERY movie.
(with the exception of ‘ Get Carter’ …. the original, not the embarassing Stallone nightmare).

Should never be forgiven for Jaws – The Revenge surely?

I think some of Michael Caine’s work in America that the critics slaughtered was actually quite good. Ashanti, about slave traffickers and Caine’s attempt to find his kidnapped wife, is quite a good story and The Swarm, about a plague of killer bees( which do exist in Texas), was a well made and frightening film. Jaws- The Revenge, well, every actor and singer has to make a flop sometimes, but it’s still watchable late at night when you’ve had a few drinks. Bear in mind, Caine had left Britain after a huge tax bill had almost wiped him out and a million dollars a film was very tempting.
