It’s often been said that A Shot in the Dark is peak Clouseau, with Return being the last good film in the franchise before Sellers and Edwards parted company with reality for Strikes Again and Revenge, but I find it really hard to understand that point of view when I’m watching them. Yes, the humour is broader and sillier than ever, and they’re just throwing in anything that they think will get a laugh, but the overall mood of the films is wall-to-wall fun, and they’re great comfort viewing for when the horrors of the world are gnawing at your heels. The less said about the recent revelations about Graham Stark, though, the better.
