Monty Python and the Holy Grail

“A duck!” Our vote for the best Python film, purely as it’s more… well, *Pythonic* than Life of Brian, and isn’t a pile of shit like The Meaning of Life. Graham Chapman, marvellous shots of tatty Scottish landscapes, and *that* ending (how long will they leave the music playing for? When we got it out on video 15 years ago it lasted for about five minutes) make yet another viewing well worthwhile.

A mixed bag, which turned out better than expected considering the shoestring budget, many production problems (smashed camera lenses!) & Graham Chapman’s drinking being out of control at the time.

Plenty of great set pieces, like the Black Knight & the Killer Rabbit and many more.

It seems every American nerdy guy can quote whole chunks of dialogue, while over here they tend to go for The Life Of Brian.

Graeme Garden’s in the trailer sans sideburns, in a Bergman send-up cribbed from the pre-Python series Twice a Fortnight.

There is presumably somewhere some sort of personality test which determines your type based on which Monty Python film you like best, as they all so different. Always felt this was the most consistently funny. I wonder if the American nerd fondness for this is due to it corresponding quite neatly with sword and sorcery / Disc world enthusiasms (no disrespect intended to the late, sainted Mr. Pratchett, whose work I haven’t read).
