Films: B is for...

Blind Fury

That’s it, Dave, always leave ’em wanting the toilet. This was the last Putt-related film to be released in the US, and if you’re going to zip up your legacy, why not sum up everything you’ve got hopelessly wrong with it in one handy package? The Euro-connection in the form of Rutger Hauer as the blind, scimitar-wielding Viet vet. Colonial job allocation with Aussie Philip ‘Dead Calm’ Noyce at the helm. An irritating ‘cute’ kid. And really, really, incredibly fucking dreadful attempts at wry, self-deprecating, zany humour (‘I also do circumcisions!’) Oh, and a sizeable loss at the box office, natch.

There is a mildly amusing bit where Rutger is driving a van (because of course he is) and bumps into a fellow road user who retorts “ARE YOU BLIND?!” and Rutger replies “Yeah, what’s your excuse?” Naturally this bit was in the trailer and had lost most of its humour once you watched the movie because you knew it was coming. And people complain about trailers these days.
