The book was great and lots of subversive fun for a school-kid. The TV series was a travesty however. Seeing Kenneth Williams, Arthur Mullard, Rita Webb etc. in school uniforms seemed creepy even back then. There was also a rubbish comedy band that would do a musical number each show too.

Williams’ diaries reveal a lot of tension when this was being filmed, largely due to friction between him and Rita Webb; I don’t remember the programme but I do remember an illustrated spread in Look-In, which indeed made the programme look hideous, with ancient, grotesque-looking troupers pretending to be children.

Sounds very weird, almost like El Chavo Del Ocho which was a staple of Mexican TV for years: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/El_Chavo_del_Ocho

I’m reliably informed that Talking Pictures TV were planning on repeating this fairly recently, but the presence of Arthur Mullard (brute, cunt, and incestuous paedophile) proved an insurmountable stumbling block and it was quickly shelved again.
