Whittaker’s World of Music

ATTEMPTING TO stretch his musical scope beyond ol’ Durham town, ROGER WHITTAKER sang and hosted this lunchtime music’n’quiz engagement (including all-expenses-spared set and giveaway housewifey audience) in a variety of inappropriate cravats. The Bee Gees and Mary Hopkin turned up, The Clash did not.

There’s a classic out-take of Rog somewhere out there. Strumming away on his guitar, talking through the story of the song…strum, strum, strum, natter, natter, natter – ready to begin and… he forgets how the song starts. Big silence. Classic.

Did “The Last Farewell” come from this series? One of Rog’s shows had a competition – readers send in some lyrics and he’ll put a tune to them, and a viewers’ vote determined which song would be released as a single – and “Farewell” was the winner.

The Clash did not show up because the they did not exist. The show was in 1971.
