Thundercats

EARDRUM-RATTLING ENSEMBLE of busily-animated animal superheroes, with more than a nod to the likes of He-Man. Each week main man Liono, bruiser Panthro, brains Tigra, woman Cheetara, irritating brats Wileykit and Wileykat, and stupid comedy-relief-character Snarf wielded their superpowers to thwart mystical bandage-wearing Mum-Ra, before reconvening for a brisk discussion of what everyone had just learned. When they were on the move, so the theme tune informed you, they were “loose”. Over a hundred episodes were made, each and every one in the DVD collection of Andi Peters.

If I remember this correctly, the first episode reveals the nascent Thundercats travelling in a space-ship. They’re a technologically-advanced species. But not so advanced that they’ve invented clothes yet.

I seem to recall, aged nine, being disturbingly fascinated by the naked Cheetara and Tigra.

But then they crash-land their craft on Mum-Ra’s planet and decide they need clothes. It all became rather less interesting thereafter.

Excitingly, now been given an, err…’noughties + 1′ revamp and starring on the Cartoon Network later this year. There’s a trailer on You Tube that does look worth a goosey.

Wasn’t there a Brian Blessed inspired Bollywood style villain called Rum-Ma or something like that.

One of those programmes with a tremendously exciting title sequence that descended into low level boredom once the episode got underway.

“Thunder! Thunder!! Thunder!!! I HAVE THE PO- oh, wait a minute…”
