Take A Letter, Mr Jones

YIKES! IT’S RULA “MRS WATERMAN” LENSKA and JOHN “NOT GAY, MERELY VERY HAPPY” INMAN together at last! And in a Saturday night sitcom from that illustrious house of laughs, Southern Television! With Rula as a dominatrix boss and John as a simpering secretary! Taking the piss, surely.

One of the questions I ask myself occasionally is to wonder at what point Miriam Margolyes tore off the bit of her cv that detailed her regular cameos in this (as a demented Italian maid). I’d suggest 16 days (so, when the first episode of A Kick Up the Eighties was broadcast).

This “comedy classic” is currently being repeated every Sunday at 7pm on Film 24, Sky channel 157. Worth watching for the unintentionally hilarious opening and end titles alone. And it’s followed at 7.30pm by Julia McKenzie sitcom ‘That Beryl Marston’ in which she sings the theme tune. Just when you thought Sunday nights couldn’t get any more depressing…..

It’s now currently blotting the copybook of Talking Pictures TV. No sign of “That Beryl Marston…!” as yet, but given the number of Southern series on the channel it can only be a matter of time. They should stick to the Four Star back catalogue.

Watched an episode of this on TPTV this week. Miriam Margolyes was there to be fallen on by John Inman, judging by the biggest laugh from the audience in the whole half hour. They should have made it a Rock Follies style musical, taking its cue from the toe-curling opening titles.

Beryl Marston is on next week, same channel, presumably repeated ad infinitum.
