Superstars, The

LONG-RUNNING ATHLETIC championfest ranging around first the UK then Europe. Initially famous celebs from the sports world were featured (e.g. Bobby Charlton sprinting with dislodged hair strands, Kevin Keegan falling off a bike), but the show entered an imperial phase with the advent of the Superstar specialist athlete, most notably Olympic judo champion BRIAN JACKS of the “controversial” sliding squat-thrust technique and massive consumption of unpeeled oranges. DAVID VINE and RON PICKERING were your commentators. Revived in the new millennium to good effect, thanks largely to jocular JOHN INVERDALE behind the mike.

Other much repeated slip-ups include James Hunt falling out a canoe & Stan Bowles shooting a table.

I thought Brian Jacks was a superhero when I was a kid due to his athletic mastery on this show. I was so excited when they announced a World Superstars tournament that I was sure Brian would win for Britain, Unfortunately he was too ill to attend, so they brought in a last minute replacement for the UK with boxer Dave “Boy” Green standing in instead, and who finished nowhere behind the American entrants. I was gutted!

Rugby player Keith Fielding was another sports personality to get exposure through this show.
