Paul Hogan Show, The

RED-FACED ANTIPODEAN roisterer, sometime big screen fish shooter, here made his name via Benny Hill-type sketch shows with such characters as Red Mullet (a Jaws pisstake with toilets), hapless stuntman Leo Wanker, and Strop, your all-around champion hybrid yob/lifesaver whose favourite form of insult was to pass an invisible life-saving rope out of his forehead towards the offending person, with wonderful facial expressions. Turned up on UK screens in the first week of Channel 4, standing out by virtue of there being almost no other comedy to be found.

Typically politically incorrect Aussie humour of its day that, of course, worked really well over here. Anyone who has a character called Leo Wanker, a name that Auntie BBC would definitely not allow, must have something going for him and the sniggers could be heard at school for days when the name was mentioned.

Didn’t find his show (or films) all that funny.

He was just another Benny Hill clone with licence to throw in a few swear words in order to be radical/controversial.

The Paul Hogan show seemed a strange show for right-on Channel 4 to show when it began. ( though it was still more watchable than a misery-fest like Walter with Ian McKellan. ) It was sub-Benny Hill stuff, and they only seemed to own a handful or so of compilation episodes which they kept on repeating. Saying that, it did make an impression on me as a confused and emotional 13 year old in sexy cast member Delaney, who’d usually appear in various skimpy outfits.
