HEAD-TURNING HORROR-FI drama wherein the locals of a Hebridean island get killed off one by one by a bizarre monster which turns out to be (of course) a Russian soldier who had his brain plugged into a nuclear powered submarine as an experiment, but suffered from radiation burns/sickness (likewise), escaped and was washed up on the island. Brilliant stuff. Based on “The Child of the Vodyanoi” and adapted by the late, great Robert Holmes, it also starred Maurice Roeves, James “Game of Thrones/Braveheart” Cosmo and James Warwick.

Superbly sinister while filmed in the dark with red filters. Then the climax was shot in broad daylight on a golf course with a man in a wetsuit killing the suspense.

From the era when BBC Scotland moved on from old fluff like the White Heather Club to making edgy dramas. The Nightmare Man really was like a cross between horror and sci fi and very unsettling.

It also has Cecilia Imrie a few years becoming a Victoria Wood foil, & upping the “been in Dr Who” quota.
Pat Gorman played the titular Nightmare Man, & was often in Dr Who playing monsters, aliens, security guards etc.
