Midnight Caller

THE EQUALIZER meets FRASIER. GARY COLE was your intense ex-cop who’d left the force in disgrace after accidentally shooting his partner (as you do) only to start a new life as a radio DJ counselling late night hour listeners on their problems and then hunting down those who caused them. Went under the name, or handle if you like, of Nighthawk. Kicked around the arse-end of BBC1 weeknight schedules for ages.

Granada repeated this late on thursday nights in the late 1990s, which must make it one of the last programmes to move from BBC to ITV.

“THE EQUALIZER meets FRASIER” maybe with a dash of Shoestring.

Forces TV (soon to close) also reran the show.

The first 2 seasons are great, but Wendy Kilbourne quit due to her real life pregnancy (hence why Devon King sells KJCM 98.3 to explain her pregnancy) and the series takes a downturn after that.

The title sequence of this – complete with ultra-sleazy late-night saxophone – was misleading to say the least, giving the impression that you were about to see some softcore romping. Needless to say any filthy little adolescent monkeys hoping for at least a couple of dirty bits must have been sorely disappointed. (I am, of course, speaking entirely from experience and am suitably ashamed.)
