TV: H is for...

Horace

BARRY JACKSON doled out pathos and bathos as the eponymous middle-aged man bearing the brain of a child. Occupies time working at that staple of small screen wearycoms, the Joke Factory, before hanging around staring in shop windows then beating retreat back to his mum’s for tea. Not most obvious of subjects for comedy.

I remember this being screened around the same time as Walter starring Ian McKellen was shown and made me wonder if Northern England was full of mentally challenged men wearing flat caps. Horace wasn’t quite as bleak as the 2 Walter movies and was sensitively written and acted, but seemed a bizarre choice for a show screened mid evening on ITV in what would normally be the sitcom slot. I think even Ken Loach would’ve found this a tad depressing.
