TV: H is for...

Home Cookery Club

TEN-MINUTE MID-AFTERNOON morsel. Two unseen presenters (eager-but-useless man, down-to-earth, resourceful woman) did simple recipies without their faces ever being revealed. Easy-to-and-fro banter (“Now for the eggs!” “Oh, can I do that?”) kept up effortless charade for easy couple of years.

I remember this. Glad someone else does. It would have been 1986 on Central TV. For some reason I can clearly recall the theme music even though I was only very young.

Steve, Tyne Tees showed these as well – usually in the gap between The Young Doctors and Children’s ITV. So, depending on how quickly you got home from school, you caught either the whole thing or the dying seconds of some exotic looking chicken dish (it was always some new way of cooking effing chicken) and asking your mother why she didn’t serve up something like that once in a while. Her reply was usually to shove a ham sarnie in your gob.

I used to think that if I had worked in television and had access to the tapes, it could have been “doctored” to include some humourous if unhygienic sound effects.
