Get it Together!

WHO ORDERED the embarrassing uncle? Two small teas and a round of post-BASIL BRUSH ignominy for sometime Owenite stooge “MISTER” ROY NORTH, thanks to this dire pop show misfire featuring insipid guests of the sub-Rollers likes of Our Kid and Lieutenant Pigeon doing grinny mimes to unamused children in T-shirts. By way of an encore, Roy himself would step up to the mike to deliver, PETER GLAZE-esque, a strangulated rendition of a hit parade disc in his own, inimitable style.

Roy referred to songs he liked as ‘chunky’ and thought that was a dead clever catch-phrase. It wasn’t.

Who could forget Mister Roy’s attempt at that modern classic, Splish Splash?

This just showed how clever Basil Brush was……Roy was nothing without him.
Just remember North you’re not bigger than the show.

I recently watched a jaw-dropping YouTube clip of Roy North attempting Swords Of A 1000 Men By Tenpole Tudor that’s just as much a Did-that-really-happen experience as seeing the Crackerjack cast singing Making Plans For Nigel by XTC. Despite its awfulness, Roy gives it his all and you actually start rooting for him in an Eddie The Eagle way.

It always seemed a bit ‘off’ to me when the Play Away gang essayed a contemporary pop hit rather than a children’s standard or an old stage musical tune. Alex Norton singing ELO’s All Over the World, Floella Benjamin singing We Are Detective and Brian Cant singing Give it Up spring to mind.
