Bailey’s Comets

MORE OBSCURO-MATION. The only roller derby chase cartoon in history, for which we can all be thankful. Heroes were titular asteroid-monikered mopes. Numerous villains included the Jekyll Hydes, who turned from posh toffs (“Good show, what?”) into evil sniggerers the next. Other “teams” were the Yo-Ho-Ho’s (pirates, unsurprisingly) and The Really Rottens.

Actually, Hanna-Barbera can’t be blamed for this one (though Bill’n’Joe refugees Joe Ruby and Ken Spears did help think it up) – this was from the people who gave us the Houndcats, the Inspector and Super President (you heard me), DePatie-Freleng. Although for some reason the main characters looked like they’d been done by Filmation.

Fact: Eric “Carry On” Rogers conducted (but didn’t write) the music on this and other DFE shows!

There’s one episode where the jekyll hydes give their magic potion to the comets and they suffer the same effects – when i saw one of the girls turning green and becoming evil i got turned on for the first time – i was about 7 but for me its a shockingly vivid formative memory. Wish i could see that episode again, but it would probably be incredibly disappointing.

It always ended with a cliff hanger. Tune in next time to see what happens next. What happened next was a completely different storyline. Bastards.
