Radio 1: The Shows

Playground

SATURDAY MORNING pre-Junior Choice half-hour magazine show for listeners too young for pop thrills, kind of like an aurual equivalent to Magpie, for which short straw-drawer in chief was DAVID RIDER. Heavy on promotion of forthcoming BBC children’s TV shows and started with a load of kids all shouting out “Playground!”, though greater enjoyment was to be found If you listened in five minutes early, when you could hear all the R1 jingles (“It’s the happy happy sound!”) played one after the other, to ‘warm up’ the transmitters, a dawn tradition they maintained until a round the clock service arrived in 1991.
