Thank the maker! Yes, it’s the Billy Wilder/Jack Lemmon edition of the classic newspaper yarn. It fairly oozes class, too with Walter Matthau the excellent Vincent Gardenia and the titanic Charles Durning thrown in as well. Some think this a little coarser than the original but they know not a jot ‘cos that one didn’t have Jack Lemmon in it, so it can’t have been better. On an almost related note, we caught an early morning showing last week of the William Friedkin/Jack Lemmon version of Twelve Angry Men featuring George C Scott, William Petersen and Ozzie Davis which was just superb and just as good , if not better, as the original. The moral seems to be, put Jack Lemmon in anything and it got a whole lot better. Gor bless ya, Jack!

Absolutely fan-bloody-tastic film. Who else but Matthau could bark “screw your diabetes!” and make it instantly funny as opposed to ridiculously insensitive?
