Water Margin, The

PRE-DATING MONKEY, here came 108 plucky knights brought back from the dead to battle nastiness in the Orient, working out of their base in the titular wetlands of Lian Shan Po. Hero was Lin Chung, whose missus was called Hsiao. Tripitaka-like Hu San-niang carried two swords crossed on her back and fought with them simultaneously. Baddy (with Ming-style stringy moustache) was called Koa Chia. Voiced over here by, among others, BERT KWOUK and MIRIAM MARGOLYES.

First time I’d ever seen someone being cut-in-half on a telly programme. At 6pm on a Sunday too!

This is one of my favourite programmes ever. I absolutely loved it. Still got the episode details from the Radio Times, the record by Godaigo and a lettercard from NHK in Japan to whom I wrote asking for merchandising. I now live in Japan, and Atsuo Nakamura who played Lin Chung, came to my town to give a talk. Unfortunately I didn’t know and I was gutted. I would have loved to have got his autograph. And yes, I remember the slicing in half, although there was no blood or anything like that. I fancied Teruhiko Aoi and thought Sanae Tsuchida was such a cool fighter.

One of my uncles really liked this back in the day, even if he managed to get it mixed with Monkey, which didn’t go in so much to hacking heads off & sending them flying accross a field.
