Time Tunnel, The

MORE PSYCHEDELIC tomfoolery from the house of the Poseidon king. This was the one where an experiment – Project Tic Toc – that went wrong caused Tony Newman (JAMES DARREN) and Doug Phillips (ROBERT COLBERT) to tumble helplessly toward a new fantastic adventure each week, often in the American Civil War, watched by, yes she’s back again already, LEE “CATWOMAN” MERIWETHER at the lab via a crazy op-art spirally thing. Ace opening bombastic narration: “Two American scientists are lost in the swirling maze of past and future ages, during the first experiments on America’s greatest and most secret project, the Time Tunnel. Tony Newman and Doug Phillips now tumble helplessly toward a new fantastic adventure, somewhere along the infinite corridors of time.” Are you listening, Russell T Davies?

How come Lee Meriwether and the hilariously named security chief Jiggs managed to make round trips through the tunnel and yet Tony and Doug couldn’t make it back?

Me and a mate used to spend hours recreating the opening title sequence, by the simple means of a pack of cards thrown into the air, and us leaping off of his dogs kennel through said cards, with as many spectacular aerial stunts as we could muster.
You really did have to make your own entertainment back then…….

I love the fact everywhere they went the inhabitants could all speak English – “I am Joshua”, etc

And a 77-year old military policeman with a handlebar moustache named Jigs massacring a bunch of spear-wielding Spartans with a machine gun…

I’ve not seen too much of this, mostly when Channel 4 repeated it in the 1990s.

Alexei Sayle did a good spoof called Drunk In Time.
