Saturday Night Affairs

ANOTHER WOEFULLY misguided effort from the regions (see SIN ON SATURDAY) to fill the 10.30pm slot when Parky, Carrott and Wogan were on holiday. See if you can spot the mistakes here: each week an “international celebrity” would “throw” a “party” for their “friends” at Pebble Mill, where the cameras would rove around the proceedings, inviting us the viewer to experience the high life from our own armchair. The first “host” was VIDAL SASSOON, the second, er, DAVE LEE TRAVIS. VICTOR SPINETTI was going to be the third, but the axe fortuitously fell.

A lowpoint in the history of BBC1 and no doubt hastened the departure of Alan Hart. The Grade revolution was just around the corner.

I’d rather see Victor Spinetti picking at tagnuts than Dave Lee Travis doing almost anything.

I can remember the DLT one and he seemed to drone on to some other DJ about the good old days of the sixties, while the rest of the room became drunker. It would probably have been cheaper to have filmed DLT talking to his producer after his Radio 1 show. Also another nail in the coffin for the unlamented Aubrey Singer/ Alan Hart era of BBC One as this was a typical Hart era offering, cheap and forgettable, and possibly Alan Hart, in his last days at BBC1, decided to pull Saturday Night Affairs before the papers and viewers forced it off air.
