Private Schulz

THE SECOND World War, eh? That was a barrel of laughs! Especially the time when dopey Nazi private MICHAEL ELPHICK cocked up a plan to drop forged £5 notes on England! And IAN RICHARDSON turned up as, variously, fiendish plotter Major Neuheim, an incompetent British officer and a Glaswegian “old lag”! Ho hum! Happy days!

Not the most obvious topic for a light hearted drama, the SS, but Michael Elphick was brilliant as the forger who became an unlikely member of the SS. Also the series alluded to real events, a plot to overthrow Hitler in the early days of the war and a brothel run by the Gestapo, which did exist in real life and was used as a honeytrap. Sadly Private Schultz has never been seen since the eighties.

I’m sure this was repeated on BBC4 in it’s early days, maybe just 1 episode.
