Playboard

THE PLAYBOARD Puppet Theatre did many things (most famously BUTTON MOON), but started off on Sunday morning BBC1 with this effort. PLAYBOARD featured a mole and a hedgehog (Mo and Hedge respectively), and, the horror, CHRISTOPHER LILLICRAP. The story involved the pair trudging through miles of fake turf (puppeteers operated them from gulleys below) to get to a circus/funfair tent, watch an act, then piss off home. Lillicrap being Lillicrap, a song was worked unsubtly into the show.

Oh your acid wit. I used to love this programme when I was a kid. A story from Christopher, a puppet circus act every episode and yes lots of fake turf now I come to think of it. Or perhaps real turf.

    The Gingerbread Man!!
“You can run and jump! you can skip and hop! you can run run run as fast as you can, you can’t catch me I’m the Gingerbread Man”

Classic Lillicrap tune I have never quite got out of my head in 30-odd years since I last saw it

I loved this show too and will often sing the lillicrap version of the Little Red Hen song to my family members when they won’t get off their backsides to help me. Mind you, it doesn’t get me a bolt hole in the Greek islands like it did for Christopher.

Christopher Lillicrap – one of two kids tv presenters whose name used to provide endless hours of giggling and dirty jokes between me and my younger siblings.
