AN ODD (and rather depressing, frankly) feature-length stop-motion cartoon about a kindly old inventor bloke (standard issue stereotype – thick glasses, grey hair, absent-minded) who lived in a house with a duck (called “Sonny Duckworth”, for fuck’s sake) and a sort of hairy Captain Caveman-style twat who ate liquorice allsorts. There was a car race, and so he invented a car to beat the local baddie, and win the heart of the local bread-selling woman, or something. Easter holiday daytime “treat”.

This is the most successful film ever made in Norway, and they show it on TV every Christmas there. Not only is the duck not a duck – he’s a magpie (which seems to have confused the dubbing team of the English language version) – but this is totally not depressing, it’s actually rather wonderful. It starts out quaint and meticulously designed, then ends up about a hundred times more exciting than Days of Thunder with a fantastic, million mile an hour race finale.
To put the icing on the cake, in the English dub Murray Walker does the race commentary, and does it brilliantly too. He even calls the Argentinian driver Carlos Fandango – little joke for the dads, there. Seriously, it’s a terrific film.

The magpie who is not a duck looks distinctly like a penguin, which he isn’t either

I’ve not seen this for years but it was great fun, Murray Walker commentating was the icing on the cake for me.
