TV: P is for...

Partridge Family, The

SUGAR-COATED DISPATCHES from the picket-fenced permanently-sunny perimeters of the eponymous bird-named brood, with matriach SHIRLEY JONES trying to keep DAVID CASSIDY, SUSAN DEY, DANNY BONADUCE, SUZANNE CROUGH and JEREMY GELBWAKS in order, mostly through toothy grins, sickly laughter and sodas, inbetween packing them all off round the country in a shitty camper van to sing songs.

Grew up with a major Crush on David Cassidy(who didn’t). Couldn’t get to London to see him perform so this was the next best thing, sitting glued to the TV when the Partridge Family was on!I still do THINK I LOVE YOU !

This was loosely based on the career of The Cowsills a family band from Rhode Island who toured the USA in an old school bus before becoming famous.

Supposedly Susan Dey was hired on the grounds the producers thought she could sing but couldn’t. Brian Forster replaced Jeremy Gelbwaks after one season as Chris, because he acted up too often behind the scenes.

I can remember The Partridge Family being repeated in the late seventies, a couple of years after David Cassidy’s fame had passed, but it still being a good watch as the singing and the humour were amiable enough. Also the David Cassidy character had a little bit of a rebellion in one episode, when he became bored with baseball and said it sucked, to the horror of his dad who was a big fan, but he soon came round to the game again. Interesting as many teens in America’s idea of rebellion wasn’t dodging a ball game, but smoking pot and listening to Alice Cooper.
