Not With a Bang

POST-APOCALYPTIC SITCOM with JOSIE LAWRENCE based around the premise that JUDITH HANN drops a flask of green virus on the TOMORROW’S WORLD TV studio floor, thus annihilating the human race. Several poor comic actors survive (MIKE GRADY, STEPHEN REA, RONALD PICKUP). Jokes do not.

Hmm – to call Ron Pickup and Stephen Rea poor comic actors is a bit much – okay, perhaps the hangdog Mr. Rea isn’t known for his comedies, but they’re both pretty top-drawer acting talent – and all the more out of place in this strangely perfunctory sitcom, main ‘joke’ being that Ron was trying to encourage Grady and Lawrence to have children to ensure survival of the human race, while he and Rea had sub-Roy Clarke whimsical conversations, although I do remember Rea mid-way through some suitably bland philosophizing finding he had stumbled into reciting the words of Imagine.

Ronald Pickup is anything but a poor actor and has a long list of decent roles. To me, he will always be the sleazy forger in The Day Of The Jackal who lives in a grimy flat in Genoa and ends up being killed of by The Jackal when he demands too much money,
