Marty/Marty Amok/It’s Marty/The Marty Feldman Comedy Machine

PUPIL-POPPING PARADE of slapstick and speeded-up shenanigans which sprawled across many a year (and channel) but always traded in the same business: double-time running about; period costumery with present-day gags; monsters in dog baskets; monsters behind people masks; triple-time running about; and shouting. Most of it was written by BARRY TOOK. The good bits.

Sadly suffered from Marty Feldman wanting to be in every bloody sketch and the focal point of absolutely everything, and not really letting the supporting cast get a word in edgeways. Having said that, the lightning speed day trip is still mighty good fun.

I think the late George Melly summed Marty Feldman up nicely in his long out-of-print book The Media Mob – ‘An anarchic comedian, he can be very funny or depressingly over-frantic. It makes me nervous to watch him. He tests his public like a child who isn’t sure he is loved.’
The amount of recycling he did in his late sixties / early seventies telly years is pretty astonishing. Most of At Last the 1948 Show turned up again in some form or another in his solo shows, and the ‘monster in a basket’ sketch was performed God knows how many times over the years.
