Galloping Galaxies!

"I am to do a new voice: Son of Sid!"THAT EXCLAMATION MARK says it all. Textbook “sideways-look-at” kids sitcommery penned by BOB “RENTAGHOST” BLOCK, here substituting wacky aliens for “visitors from the spirit world” and 25th century spacemen for Harold and Ethel Meeker. Whole thing enlivened by unlikely presence – in voice form only – of KENNETH WILLIAMS played onboard ship computer SID. Further zaniness epitomised by character names like Dinwiddy Snurdle. Blue-screen blarney supplied, as ever, by MATT IRVINE.

Title likely-as-not came from Isaac Asimov’s novel ‘Foundation’ – towards the end of that book, as I recall, a character says “Great galloping galaxies!” when a large spacecraft suddenly appears.

The only thing I remember from this show is the name Dinwiddy Snurdle. For some reason my adolescent brain found this name made me laugh until I couldn’t breathe, something that usually only The Benny Hill Show could make me do.

Quite loopy at times, even if some of the acting was hammy.

Inept space pirate Murphy with his hapless Robot minions 7 & 20 (bless you honour you’re a lovely man!) were usually causing trouble.

By contrast Female Robot 35 was almost too efficient & literal minded.

SID had a son called Junior played by Ken with a weird squeaky voice.
