Gaffer, The

NOT MUCH to recommend this post-FROGGITT BILL MAYNARD trundler. Here the “sit” was a small engineering company with a smaller list of orders, a pile of debts and a stroppy shop-steward played by RUSSELL “LONELY” HUNTER. The “com” was supposed to accrue from Gaffer Maynard’s attempts to keep the company afloat. Topical enough for its day but, on the whole, you’d rather have a pint of cookin’ and a bag of nuts.

I only remember the start of this show, where the Gaffer would find a parking ticket on his car (I think a Rover) and throw it on the back seat where there were loads more. When he drove off he would chuck some out of the windows until he got to the factory. I think my parents would switch over after that.

The main thing I remember is the theme tune ” He’s the Gaffer! Got his back against the wall! ” and it’s desperate attempt to sound funky. There’s even an attempt at a rap by some northern worker sounding bloke in there too

I think the “rap” was actually performed by Maynard himself.
