Duncan Dares

POST-BLUE PETER green chequered trouser era PETER DUNCAN daredevil portfolio. Brave Pete did stuff The Kids had requested, i.e. pretend to be James Bond, drive a car across the sea and walk on hot coals to much pain.

I remember he also tried being a truck racer & a tight rope walker.

There was a spin-off book with write up of some episodes, complete with a “Don’t Try This At Home!” warning at the front.

Peter tried driving a modified VW Beetle at sea (can’t remember if it was the Channel or the Irish Sea) but it sunk on the way.

I think it was the Channel. Easy to see where the Top Gear lads got their inspiration from.

Always felt sorry that Peter never got the love and nostalgia that John Noakes did. There’s a Blue Peter clip of him cleaning the face of Big Ben that matches Noakes up Nelson’s Column for thrills. I remember the tabloids going after him when he became a BP presenter for appearing in 2 racy adult movies as a young actor – Stardust with David Essex and a dodgy Stanley Long soft porn comedy called On The Game.

One of the easier dares was a route march with some soldiers, Peter had to carry an iron crook on a strap with him as the Army wouldn’t allow him to carry a rifle.
