Children’s Island

ANOTHER BATCH OF pretend wartime evacuees get their lives laid bare on the box, this time courtesy of a plane ride to New York which crashes, leaving them stranded on a desert island. Lord Of The Flies-esque psychological warfare never shows up. Rescue boat does.

Controversially shot in Apartheid-era South Africa, starred future TV chef Stefan Gates and ageing B-movie cowboy George Montgomery as the President. Shown in the US on Christian Broadcasting Network and Disney Channel AND Nickelodeon in the USA.

Finally shown up online, one ep of which. Very odd. Also with JD Roth as the main kid. Roth’s an interesting guy. US kid actor, host of the US Fun House, runnerup for Wesley Crusher in Star Trek TNG, and voice of the 90s Jonny Quest, then became a reality tv mogul, creating shows like the Biggest Loser.
the show itself is weird. Children’s Island (1984) – A bunch of British kids some of whom are clearly south Afircan, modern airplanes in a supposedly 40s airfield, George Montgomery’s ‘President’ isn’t quite Roosevelt. And there’s annoying songs sung by Sarth Ifrikan stage school brats to the tune of the Red Flag/O Tannenbaum. It’s very odd, feels more like a continental show than a British or American show, despite trying to be both. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QrX3lTRWzw4
