TV: B is for...

Buzzfax

CLIVE DOIG-facilitated uber-obscure one-week-only revisitation of the old Zokko!/Outer Space-model of ‘Backroom Boys’-linked Saturday Morning programming strand, featuring Ceefax ‘presenting’ the likes of DINKY DOG, THE MONKEES, BATTLE OF THE PLANETS and for-yawn’s-sake EDGAR KENNEDY, courtesy of a quiz-setting blocky arrangement of equals-signs with the voice of Jig off JIGSAW, and Ceefaxificated renditions of the likes of Micky Dolenz and Keyop. Never again attempted yet indelibly burned into the memory of the mass bewildered.

I remember this. I recall seeing it only once and it was while I was on holiday on the Isle of Wight, so it must’ve been July or August – I had thought this was how BBC South did their Saturday morning TV because when I got home there was no sign of the blocky Ceefax’ed insect continuity device that kind of bounced up and down a teeny bit. Ceefax was cool back in 1981, and this was probably an attempt at extending the brand as we’d say now … or getting kids to press some of those extra buttons on the remote control. We didn’t get teletext until 1986 but whatever.
