Radio 4: The Programmes

Breakaway

"Thank you Bernard, now you can have a shave"“LET’S do the Breakaway, come on and shakeaway, it’s got the snappiest syncopaaaa-tion!”. Oh yes. That dreaded peal of croaking charleston brass could mean only one thing – your parents had snatched away the radio and spoiled your Saturday morning Radio 1 fun by switching over to hear what that nice Mr Falk had to say about this year’s least hip holiday destinations. Familiar yet utterly unloved, though the first twenty seconds were still worth a quick listen just in case they’d hired one of those mental, um, holiday standin hosts, like Bill Oddie, that always prompted a million irate and unamused letters to FEEDBACK.

They used to feature destinations that to most people were way out of their budget like Nepal, but interesting to hear about all the same, as filling Breakaway up with features on Benidorm and Brighton would make it obvious and tedious.
Not mentioned on here, but sort of travel related as it was a programme about transport and travel, Going Places. I do remember them doing car tests on the radio, which sounded quite surreal, particularly as one of the presenters was Barry Film Norman. Now let’s see what the new MG Metro can do.
