Maggie Smith won an Oscar for her portrayal of the eponymous character in this adaptation of the well known Muriel Spark private school Morningsidery, but Gordon Jackson got nothing… ever. Proof, as if it were needed, that the Oscars are just so much flummery. Our Gordon got no mention here, nor even for his seminal roles in the likes of The Foreman Went to France and Hell Drivers, both of which films the ‘Academy’ managed to overlook entirely. Pah! Tosh! Flimshaw!
