Shirley feels a late surge from behindBy way of a hat-doff to the party conference season, here’s Shirley Williams (“a dear gal, a lovely sweet gal”) hoping to break the mould with a few mates. But who are they? Three points plus a life-size cut-out of Bill Rodgers to whoever gets the full set.

Heh, I can’t understand why the SDP never came to power.

Well, that’s Simon Cadell on the left (I’d like to have seen SC doing a turn at the SDP conference: “Jeff can’t hear you, Hi-De-Hi. Now, I’ve a letter here from David Owen, it’s, er, erm, well I’ll read it in his own words…”), not sure who’s next (Martin Shaw?), no idea, a scary-looking Barry Cryer, no idea, Rich Attenborough and a grinning Sir Bamber of Gascoigne.

And by the looks of things, they’re all about to get run over.

Incidentally, on the subject of Lord Barry Cryer (and there are few, surely, better subjects to be on), I was interested to learn from Michael Palin’s newly-published collection of his 1980s diaries that Baz, Mike and Alan Bennett regularly got together for ‘Three Yorkshiremen’ dinners. Now there’s a dinner table you’d like to eavesdrop on.

Simon Cadell, Robert Powell, Steve Race, Barry Cryer, Denis Quilley, Dickie Attenborough and The Bambster.

Obama might have George Clooney, but the SDP had the big guns!

BTW Barry Cryer looks like he ought to be the head of a South American cartel with that hair do and beard.
