Oh, the night took a terrible tollOUR FIRST SIGHTING in this A-Z of the sainted STILGOE. Here the man had a full half hour to fill, week after week, with, yup, the topical comedy song. Unfairly maligned still, Rich was always at his best behind a piano rather than exhorting kids to do things “with scissors and glue”, and here we got what we wanted: unadorned tunesmithery of a cheery, things-aren’t-all-that-bad-despite-it-being-the-winter-of-discontent bent.
