PICK OF THE DAY

8.10pm SURVIVORS, BBC1
Oh, could you just pass me that flask, please? Eighth episode in the first series of the show that dared kill off Peter Bowles sees Abby and Greg faced with Another Difficult Choice when two runaways – Laura and Norman – arrive at their community hoping to seek refuge from Glyn ‘Somebody’s nicked my bloody boat’ Owen. Leave it to Greg to angrily spell out this week’s debate: “Look, I know we’ve got precious little here. But I’m not prepared to risk any part of it to keep her and I don’t think you should ask any of the others to take that risk either!” But will they? Or will they? Also featuring Christopher Tranchell who is a Play School presenter and thus has no business being in a sci fi show. Ever!

ALSO SHOWING:

7.45pm THE MASTER GAME, BBC2
First series of the BBC’s chess tournament sees eight of Britain’s top players competing for the ‘BBC2 Master Game Trophy’ and £250. The Radio Times billing of the day didn’t spare the hyperbole: ‘Psychic Murder Ego Crushing! Instincts of a Killer! Expressions used to describe the most mentally demanding game known to man. This is a unique opportunity to eavesdrop on a confrontation of two minds – one trying to dominate and, if necessary, crush the other’. First to table, Michael Stean and future ‘Bill’, William Hartston who’d go on to win the tournament, take over as presenter of this show, and then ruin holiday mornings in the 1980s with Play Chess. “How many moves would it take for me to kill you from here?” Alas, only later series are available on DVD.

7.30pm CORONATION STREET, ITV
“Deirdre cuts up rough”

But Chloe Ashcroft was brilliant in Doctor Who!

Christopher Tranchell was rubbish in it, though.

Now I’m sad we never got Derek Griffiths as the Doctor. He would have been brilliant.

Carolyn Seymour( Abby Grant) will always be to me the stripper Harold Steptoe falls for in the film version of Steptoe and Son, although she played a good role in the original series of Survivors.
Survivors was good enough for the first two series, particularly the scene when the rats attack the survivors in a London railway station, but became boring by the third series when it was all about power struggles.

She buggered off to the US, and played the murderer twice in Murder, She Wrote. One in the “English” episode It Runs in the Family, where Jessica’s lookalike Liverpool Irish music hall star cousin Emma’s wartime lover Richard Johnson gets poisoned, because his nephew John Standing’s wife (Seymour) wants to prove she is more than the baker’s daughter.

And then in the Oirish Another Killing in Cork, she and Martin Jarvis play husband and wife Shakespeareans who murder a visiting American, or rather she murders him – dressed as an old Irish traveller fella.

@ George White, so she did well after escaping life after the apocalypse in Series 1 of Survivors. Been watching some clips last night and for a BBC drama from this era, the budget is far higher than you’d expect, with plenty of location shooting, and little reliance on cheap sets.
